The Florida Panthers vanquished the Edmonton Oilers in an easier-than-it-appeared six games. Aside from some OT heroics on the Oilers’ side, Florida had this in the bag, and they should be able to bring back the same core for another cup run next year. The biggest question facing Florida right now is how much they’ll have to spend to keep Sam Bennett. Right now, an AAV exceeding $7M seems for certain, with some reports of his contract being north of $10M AAV. Of course, Florida’s lack of state income tax makes it a great destination for players financially, and the team having two consecutive championships, of course, can only make it more attractive. Even if they lose Bennett, they should have no issue bringing in quality free agents. With that said, I think their top priority this summer is keeping the Conn Smythe winner around. Having them at +750, just behind the Oilers, is a steal. The Panthers are at the height of their powers right now. The only team in the east that could pose a legitimate threat to them next year is Carolina, but even then, the Hurricanes have a lot of work to do this offseason.
